An opportunity is available for a Temporary of up to 12 months (subject to review) for the position of Shift Manager in the Electricity Distribution Control Centre at Lamby Way, Cardiff. 

Reporting to the Head of Control Centres, the successful person will be responsible for managing the Control Centre network operations whilst working on their shift, as well as taking leadership responsibilities for Control Engineers. 

Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Main Responsibilities
  • Assessing electricity distribution network system security and ensuring that all HV/EHV operations are carried out within the Distribution Safety Rules and appropriate Company Policies.
  • Consultation with Control Engineers of other systems to agree network operations, and liaison in relation to the Grid Code, NGC Safety Rules, Grid Generation and DSO activity. 
  • Managing the response to132kV system faults and other major incidents.
  • The day-to-day efficient management of staff and resources, including rotas, sickness, overtime requirements and controls, leave, performance and training needs.
  • Providing guidance and quality advice to other Control staff.
  • Ensuring new staff are trained and enrolled into the quality culture of the Control Centre
  • Actioning Demand Control and other emergency procedures when required / instructed.
  • Ensuring compliance with all regulations and codes.
The Ideal Candidate

Applicants must be computer literate and be able to work on their own initiative, make fast and effective decisions, possess excellent communications skills and demonstrate an ability to positively represent the Company at all times.

Possession of a BTEC Higher National Certificate / Diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent is desirable for this role, but candidates with other relevant skills and experience will be considered on their merits. 

Evidence of your qualification certificates will be required prior to appointment.

A shift pattern exists in Control, the successful candidate will be expected to work to any one of the established shift patterns as business needs direct. This can be discussed at interview.

As the post you are applying for attracts a National Security Vetting clearance there are further eligibility requirements, information can be found on the gov.uk website. To meet national security vetting requirements, you will normally need to have been resident in the UK for at least 5 years for Security Clearance (SC) prior to the date of application. There are exceptions to this however and examples of these include:

  • you have been serving overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of HM Government
  • you were studying abroad
  • you were living overseas with parents
