We have an opportunity for a full-time Specialty Doctor / Associate Specialist to shape services at Cygnet Hospital Stevenage – while being fully supported by a Consultant Psychiatrist and first-class multidisciplinary team.

This role is based on Saunders Ward, our 15-bed Male low secure ward. The MDT on Saunders aims to provide safe and excellent quality care based on recovery model to their inpatients in a low secure environment using the Mental Health Act 1983, amended 2007 guiding principles, including the one that promotes least restrictive practice. 

Our low secure services provide intensive rehabilitation designed to support people to move safely along their care pathway in a safe environment. There is a dynamic programme of therapy and activity, designed to support the transition between inpatient services and the community.

The MDT staff are actively encouraged and supported to complete Quality Improvement Projects, as part of our supportive culture to continue to improve on the quality of care we provide.

Your role responsibilities…

  • Provide high quality treatment under the direction of a Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Assess referrals & undertake mental state examinations of service users
  • Participate in weekly ward rounds & attend multidisciplinary meetings
  • Attend Care Programme Approach & Section 117 meetings & mental health review tribunals
  • Provide up-to-date clinical information at all meetings
  • Ensure that medical decisions are implemented as planned
  • Audit medical services & ensure compliance with GMC & other professional guidelines
  • Uphold policies & procedures and contribute to service governance & development
  • Participate in the 1 in 5 On call doctors’ rota

We are looking for someone who is... 

  • Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified  
  • Recent experience at ST level in General and / or Forensic Psychiatry.
  • Preferably MRCPsych or have completed rotational psychiatric training and taken the Royal College of Psychiatrists exams
  • Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledgeable of mental health legislation & codes of practice
  • An excellent clinical decision maker, with sound judgement & ability to manage risk
  • A first-rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notes
