We are looking for team players who can coach various sports and activities to Junior School aged children within our After School Club (ASC) Programme.  All training would be provided but previous experience coaching children is desirable. Being able to effectively interact with children, adults, parents, teachers, staff, and colleagues is an integral part of the role. Team members will demonstrate a keen interest in sport and a genuine interest in helping others.

The ASC provides wraparound care for our younger children, from Nursery school age to Primary 6.

The successful candidate will be expected to commit to a minimum of 3 shifts per week (Monday to Friday). Each shift is from 2pm to 5pm. The role is initially available until June 2024 but there is the possibility of permanent, term-time roles.

Positions are available immediately, subject to satisfactory checks with previous employers and Disclosure Scotland. Candidates must have the right to work in the UK to apply for this role.

Main Responsibilities

The detail below lists the main responsibilities of this role.  It is not an exhaustive list of tasks.

  • Organising and delivering high quality coaching sessions to Junior School aged children within our activity programme (2pm to 5pm)
  • Completing Risk Assessments and Coaching Session plans before each session, managing groups of children, ensuring safety and managing behaviour
  • To maintain a safe and secure environment both indoors and outdoors

While these are the key responsibilities of the role, this is not necessarily an exhaustive list and other duties may be required to ensure the smooth running of the ASC and other events in Edinburgh Academy facilities.

The Ideal Candidate
  • Experience coaching sport to children - Essential
  • A recognised sports coaching qualification - Desirable
  • Customer service experience - Desirable
  • Experience of work/play with children of primary age – Essential
  • Genuine enjoyment of the company of young children – Essential
  • Able to respond to changes of plan where required and willing to take a flexible approach to activities - Essential
  • Interest in the play and emotional needs of children aged between 5 and 11 years of age - Essential
  • Interest in planning play, arts and sports activities for children of primary age – Desirable
  • Ability to understand and meet children's needs, including those of children with additional needs –Desirable
  • Understanding of health and safety issues that affect the day-to-day running of childcare services - Essential
About the school/organisation

The Edinburgh Academy is a fully co-educational school. The School consists of a Senior School, Junior School and a Nursery Department. The School is a member of HMC. The Edinburgh Academy moved to full co-education across the whole school in 2008. The Junior and Senior Schools are on separate sites, both of which have spacious grounds and sports facilities including extensive playing fields, an all-weather sports area, and a large Sports Hall and Centre.
