We are currently looking for a Senior Technician to join our friendly team based at Tarmac Hafod Quarry and Asphalt Plant, Newport. This position is a multi-site role supporting operation teams within the South Wales region. As well as Newport, this role is easily accessible from Cardiff, Penarth, Pontypool, Caerphilly and surrounding areas.

Reporting directly to the Technical Manager the role of Senior Technician will be responsible for supervising a team of Technicians, with overall responsibility for sampling and testing of various aggregate and asphalt products at these sites. The role of Senior Technician will also: 

• Carry out technical testing and supervise Technicians, ensuring testing is carried out in accordance with BS EN Standards and accreditations 

• Help manage the technical staff and always promote awareness of company safety policies and procedures 

• Ensure all product and constituent testing relating to aggregates and asphalt products is carried out in a safe and timely manner 

• Ensure testing procedures are fully documented and understood and communicated to any Technicians supervised by the jobholder 

• Play an active part in maintaining a strong HSE culture both within the department and on our sites 

• Help to drive a zero-harm culture 

• Be commercially aware and understand the value to the business of a fast accurate testing service 

• Support cross functions in continuous improvement and business optimisation 

The ideal candidate for the role of Senior Technician will have laboratory experience gained within the construction sector and will possess knowledge of aggregate and/or asphalt testing and production. 

This role on offer is not a “clinical laboratory” type of role – it is a vital hands-on site-based role, wearing Hi-Viz PPE and working in a small team closely supporting our operational asphalt plants. 

Suitable candidates for the role of Senior Technician will possess a UK driving license and be flexible to travel to different sites. You will also be: 

• Hard working and self-motivated 

• Able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and liaise with stakeholders of varying seniority levels 

• Accurate in their work and with strong attention to detail/able to identify potential risks/issues (training will be provided) 

• Able to work independently and to collaborate as part of a wider team 

• IT literate 

• Possess a good numerical aptitude (handling calculations/interpreting results). 

• Flexible in their working approach 

• Health and Safety conscious
