We are currently looking for a Materials Testing Technician to join our friendly team based at Tarmac Stancombe Lab which is located in Flax Bourton, Bristol. This role will also support Tarmac Cricklade Asphalt Plant, Swindon. The role of Materials Testing Technician is working on site as part of a team that supports operations. This role has a company van provided and is commutable from Westonsuper-Mare, Bristol, Chepstow, Newport, Cardiff, Gloucester, Swindon, Chippenham and the surrounding areas.

Reporting directly to the Technical Supervisor, the role of Materials Testing Technician will be responsible for:  

• Organising and undertaking technical testing to ensure test regimes and workload are met, comply with UKAS and/or Company systems. 

• Support the investigation; and resolve quality issues, advise operations and Site Teams of results and potentially suggest actions for improvement 

• Test procedures – To ensure testing procedures are fully documented, understood and communicated to comply with UKAS standard where required and have the correct equipment available in calibration 

• Sampling & Testing – To carry out sampling and testing in line with contract requirements 

• Ensuring the quality of the materials is always monitored for both internal and external customers. 

• At times, visiting other Tarmac sites to carry out various sampling and testing duties   

• Always adhering to company Health and Safety procedures.  

The ideal candidate for the role of Materials Testing Technician will have laboratory experience gained within the construction sector and will possess knowledge of aggregate and / or asphalt testing and production. We do, however, welcome applications from candidates without experience as full training will be provided. 

This Technician role is not a typical ‘lab coat’ laboratory type of role – it is a vital hands-on site-based role, wearing PPE and working in a small team closely supporting our operational concrete plants and customer sites. 

Suitable candidates for the role of Materials Testing Technician will:  

• Be hard working and self-motivated.  

• Have excellent communication skills and be able to liaise with stakeholders of varying seniority levels. 

• Have an understanding of civil engineering materials, materials testing and site construction operations 

• Be accurate in their work and demonstrate strong attention to detail. 

• Can identify potential risks/issues (training will be provided) 

• Be able to work independently and to collaborate as part of a wider team. 

• Possess a good numerical aptitude (handling calculations/interpreting results) 

• Be flexible in their working approach. 

• Be Health and Safety conscious. 

ESSENTIAL - Full UK manual car driving license with no more than 6 points as you will have a company vehicle for business use for this role
