R&M is a service area within Coventry City Council which provides repair and maintenance services to Coventry City’s operational, commercial and school portfolio.  We have a dedicated team with over 30 years’ experience of completing emergency and responsive repairs, planned preventative maintenance schedules and property improvements and refurbishments. 

The R&M team is multi-disciplined providing building works, refurbishments, general maintenance, gas servicing, maintenance and installations, electrical works and a 24 hour a day, 365 days a year emergency call out service across all trades.

The service area aims to:

  • Ensure that the all statutory compliance with industry standards, British standards and relevant Approved Codes of Practice are achieved.
  • Repairs are carried out swiftly and to a high standard
  • Projects are delivered on time and on budget

What is the job role?

Are you commercially minded, empowered and motivated to contribute and support the smooth running of planned and reactive tasks?

This is an exciting time for you to join our team as a carpenter. In this role you will be expected to provide a site based, practical solution to a variety of building services related customer needs including, planned maintenance, reactive repairs and minor works. You will work under the direction of the Facilities Manager to ensure that all tasks are completed on time and to budget to a high standard.

The main duties and responsibilities of this role include:

  • Responsible for carrying out all work in compliance with industry standards, British standards and applying all relevant Approved Codes of Practice.
  • Carry out a variety of planned work and reactive repairs effectively and efficiently within target timescales given.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all work issued is completed by due date and reporting full details of exceptions including liaison with customers.
  • Compile competitive and accurate quotations / estimates in an expedient manner upon request for both new projects and remedial works.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Whilst working as a carpenter, your duties will include but will not be limited to -

  • Planned and reactive maintenance
  • Carrying out CSDPA (Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act) adaptions in service users homes, such as stair rails, free standing external handrails, grab rail, step adaptations, painting, shower seat, drop down rail etc installations.
  • Installation, repairs and maintenance of ironmongery, locks, windows, doors, frames, partition walls and all other aspects of carpentry work.
  • Work can also be in a variety of industries including schools, residential and commercial.
  • Recognised qualification in carpentry, but also have a good knowledge of the building trade and an ability to carry out minor repairs in a variety of trades is a must. 
  • 3 - 5 years' experience gained working within facilities / repairs environment.
  • Using computer systems.

The successful candidate must have the ability to communicate in English as well as comprehend written instructions. Previous work experience in a reactive repair environment would be beneficial. A driving licence is essential. Additionally, you must have the right to work in the UK without the need for sponsorship.

Please ensure you have the relevant experience of working as a carpenter prior to applying. Desirable qualifications and experience include -

       .      Approved City and Guilds/CITB/NVQ qualification or equivalent in carpentry.

       .      Experience in working within a building trade or repairs environment.

       .      Knowledge and skills to carry out repairs in a variety of building trades. 

  • Driving licence.
  • Call out experience.
