The service you will work in….

The Together Café provides a safe space for people who feel that they are experiencing or moving towards a mental health crisis. People aged 18+, residents of the borough of Tower Hamlets can access the service as an alternative to other statutory services and get help with crisis de-escalation, interventions including 1-1 support and safety plans, wellness & recovery action plans as well as social prescribing and connections to other services.

The Together Cafe is a warm, welcoming and non-stigmatising environment, offering a range of activities and a quiet, low sensory space to cater for individual needs and aspirations. The service receives the support of East London Foundation Trust clinicians that can help with complex case discussions and crisis management.

A day in this role looks like….

As a Peer Support Worker at Hestia, you will play a crucial role in our Mental Health and Complex Needs service. Your contributions will directly influence the lives of our service users, guiding them towards a path of empowerment and independence.

A day will never look the same and some of the things you can expect to do/be responsible for are:

  • Provide supp ort to customers using Hestia's Tower Hamlets Together Café to reduce their crisis by offering a range of activities and mental health interventions within the service.
  • Motivate patients to identify causes of crises and to prevent the issues triggering crisis in the future.
  • Develop simple yet effective safety plans with the individual users to proactively manage their mental health and wellbeing and to avoid the use of crisis services such as A&E.
  • Carry out individual one to one sessions with patients and, where appropriate, to support them to develop their own coping strategies and recovery interventions.
  • Take an active role in supervision, reflective practice, appraisals, team meetings and other support mechanisms with the Team Manager outside of the operational hours of the service. In order to maintain resilience to be effective in this challenging yet highly rewarding environment.

  • Lived mental health experience.
  • Understanding of the principles of recovery as an ethos and a range of recovery approaches.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, on own initiative and to oversee induction of new peer staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to build trust and respect with the patient, providing non-judgemental and non-discriminatory support, respecting diversity and lifestyle choices.
  • Awareness of health and safety issues.
  • Working collaboratively with key partners and colleagues to achieve the best health and well-being outcomes for individuals.
  • Ability to work in accordance with service opening times: 17:00 – 21:00 Monday to Friday, 12:00 – 21:00 weekends and bank holidays.
