We are currently recruiting for an experienced Manager - Section (Aggregates) to join and lead our friendly operations team at our Tarmac Cheviot Quarry which is located in Wooler, Northumberland. As well as Wooler, this role is also accessible from Alnwick, Morpeth, Berwick-Upon-Tweed, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Blyth, Ashington, Dunbar and the surrounding areas.

Main Responsibilities

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Manager - Section (Aggregates) will manage and be accountable for all quarrying operations on the site. Safety and operational standards are the fundamentals of the role with cost control, people management, delivery to customer needs and performance improvement being key. Managing plant compliance with business policies and procedures and ensuring that legislative compliance is also a strong aspect of the role.

As Manager - Section (Aggregates) you will also be responsible for:

  • Managing, coaching and developing a highly skilled, fit for purpose and extremely motivated team to ensure business continuity and reduce business risk
  • Understanding different methods of winning and extracting raw material
  • Knowledge of techniques employed to load extracted minerals and viable options to transport extracted minerals and its applications within the industry, including feeding, crushing, screening, washing, separation, classification and beneficiation techniques
  • Understanding Quarry Regulations 1999 enabling a Reg 8.1c appointment
  • All aspects of budgetary control for all quarrying operations
  • Maintaining and implementing existing and new, Standard Operating Procedures, risk assessments and training your staff on the same
  • Managing and overseeing the safe operation of the plant and the planned preventative maintenance of all of the site’s equipment fixed and mobile with responsibility for your own safety and that of colleagues and business partners
  • Reporting and investigating any unsafe or hazardous working practices
  • Issuing of safety briefings and toolbox talks to your operational team
  • Ensuring appropriate Contractor and visitor inductions are carried out in line with company procedures

 

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for the role of Manager - Section (Aggregates) will have experience working within quarrying operations and possess SHE NVQ Level 4/QCF Level 6 and IOSH. However, we are happy to consider applications from candidates who are willing to work towards these qualifications.

To be successful in the role of Manager - Section (Aggregates) suitable candidates will have experience and knowledge of:

  • Experience successfully managing a small team, ideally within a quarrying environment
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Confidence to engage with senior stakeholders
  • Flexibility to multitask and manage change
  • Knowledge of Risk Assessments and Safe System of Work Systems
  • Working knowledge of production processes, H&S and Environmental policies
  • Competent in SAP and Microsoft packages – Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Quarrying experience preferred
  • Section 8.1.c preferred
  • IOSH advantageous
