The Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Prison Custody Officer to join our team. As a Prison Custody Officer (PCO), you will play a vital role in maintaining the safety, security, and order within the prison environment. Your exceptional judgement, professionalism, and ability to effectively manage challenging situations will contribute to ensuring a secure and rehabilitative atmosphere for both colleagues and prisoners.
This role is about helping prisoners leave with a better view of their future, your role plays an important part in this. Through your day-to-day interactions, you’ll get to know your prisoners and see their progress. 

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety and security of the prison by maintaining constant vigilance and adhering to established protocols and procedures.
  • Conduct regular patrols, inspections, and security checks to detect and prevent and security breaches, contraband, or unauthorised activities.
  • Maintain control and discipline among prisoners, intervening in conflicts or disturbances promptly and appropriately, while maintaining the utmost respect for human rights and dignity.
  • Supervise the movement of prisoners within the prison, including mealtimes, recreation periods, and work assignments, ensuring compliance with established rules and regulations.
  • Monitor and record prisoners activities, behaviour, and interactions, observations, and any notable changes in behaviour or demeanour.
  • Collaborate with other PCO’s and support personnel to coordinate and implement security measures, emergency procedures, and contingency plans.
  • Provide support and assistance to prisoners, including counselling, guidance, and encouragement towards their rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct in all interactions, maintaining confidentiality and respecting the rights and privacy or offenders.

The ideal candidate

  • Previous experience as a PCO or a similar role within an enforcement setting.
  • Excellent judgement, decision making skills, and the ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position, including the ability to restrain and manage potentially violent individuals.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish rapport, defuse conflicts, and effectively interact with colleagues, prisoners, and visitors.
  • Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, following instructions and supporting colleagues as necessary.
  • Commitment to upholding professional ethics and confidentiality whole working with sensitive information.
  • Willingness to work in a 24/7 shift-based environment, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
