An opportunity has arisen for a Civil Design Engineer based in Tipton.

The Engineering Design Team  prepare  electrical, protection/ control, mechanical and civil designs for schemes to construct, extend or modify electricity substations energised at up to 132,000 volts. The team assists network design colleagues with the assessment of substation options and develops selected schemes, from a broad engineering brief into a fully specified build package for delivery via internal and external construction teams.

The team comprises 80 design staff, primarily based at offices in Tipton, Pegasus, Avonbank and Cardiff.  It handles in excess of 500 active design commissions at any time ranging in capital value from £50k to £10m.

Main Responsibilities

We are seeking to recruit a Design Engineer Civil/Structural with experience/background within in the following areas:-

  • The detailed design of civil engineering features, primarily substation buildings, foundations, structures, roads and drainage.
  • Preparation of detailed engineering drawings in an AutoCAD environment
  • Preparation of specifications for tender and construction purposes.
  • Discharging the duties of a ‘Designer’ under the Construction Design and Management (CDM) regulations.
  • Ensuring compliance of civil design output with WPD policy.

Where applicants do not have familiarity with all of the above areas, they would be expected to demonstrate core skills within a civil/structural engineering discipline.

For example the role could be relevant to candidates with a strong civil site & construction experience_(with suitable recognised minimum qualification detailed below), or recent Civil Engineering Graduate. Where applicants initially lack particular skills, appointment on a designate basis may be considered. Training and support will be given to assist the appointee to develop into the role where necessary.

The Ideal Candidate

Candidates should ideally be qualified to a national certificate level or equivalent in an engineering discipline. Ideally applicants should have experience in preparing and manipulating engineering drawings using computer-aided design tools (e.g. AutoCAD). Applicants should hold a full UK driving licence.

Candidates will further be expected to demonstrate customer focus, flexibility, good communication skills and an ability to manage a number of design commissions.
