An opportunity has arisen for 2 Substation Design Engineers based at our offices in Bristol.

The Engineering Design (ED) Team prepare electrical, protection/ control, mechanical and civil designs for substations energised at up to 132kV. The team develops selected schemes from a broad engineering brief into a fully specified build package. The team also has responsibility for the preparation, issue and archival of protection relay configurations and settings at up to 132kV. The ED Team handles multiple commissions at any time ranging in capital value from £50k to £10m.

* Please note that if you do not hold the necessary experience or qualifications to undertake the role in full initially, you may be appointed on a lower salary until such time any training is complete.

Main Responsibilities
  • Identifying the safety implications of decisions made at design stage on the constructability, operation, maintenance and final decommissioning of substation asset.
  • Preparation of concept substation designs at pre-sanction stage. Identifying the engineering design merits of alternative scheme variants/options.
  • Preparation of detailed designs/drawings/specifications/schedules and the like for substation construction/ commissioning purposes.
  • Working closely with colleagues on a project-by-project basis as part of a discrete team.
  • Responding flexibly to the changing needs of the EHV capital spend programme.
  • Managing design workload effectively, identifying where project-specific junior team members can best carry out design work and briefing accordingly.
  • Responding promptly to queries arising from site during construction phase.
  • Ensuring compliance of design output with relevant NGED policy.
  • Preparation and manipulation of design output using computer-aided design tools.
The Ideal Candidate

Candidates should ideally be qualified to higher BTEC level in an appropriate engineering discipline and would be expected to demonstrate awareness of the design, construction and commissioning of EHV substation asset.

Applicants would be expected to gain proficiency in the use of AutoCAD and where necessary, full training would be given. Good communication skills and the ability to manage multiple diverse projects simultaneously are also essential. Applicants should hold a full UK driving licence.
