About the Role

As a Principal Engineer – Mechanical Services, you are expected to have a strong track record in
one or, ideally, multiple sectors that BakerHicks operates in. You will be a Chartered Mechanical
Building Services Engineer with experience of managing medium-size projects or managing
packages on large projects. You’ll lead and develop an enthusiastic and committed team of
Engineers and Technicians to deliver high quality output on projects and support the Associates in
day-to-day management of the local Mechanical Services team. Client care and repeat business is
crucial to BakerHicks success, so you’ll need to be able to develop and nurture relationships with our
clients (both internal and external). 

Responsibilities & Accountabilities 

  • Design and specify all aspects of mechanical building services in accordance with current guidelines, standards and regulations
  • Maintain a knowledge of current issues related to general construction and specifically electrical building services guidelines, standards and regulations
  • To undertake calculations, production of drawings, specifications and reports, site surveys, construction stage duties, client liaison, liaison with members of design/construction teams, project management, costing and any other relevant duty required to comply with the project brief.
  • Contribute to the design planning, resourcing and fee planning of specific project teams
  • Contribute to the development of the electrical services department as required.
  • Provide engineering services design and consultancy work on behalf of Baker Hicks under the
    direction of the line manager or project lead.
  • Produce design deliverables (including drawings, specifications and reports), site surveys,
    construction stage duties, client liaison with members of design/construction teams, project
    management, costing and ensure progress against the project brief
  • Check calculations and production of detailed drawings to ensure engineering designs meet
    appropriate quality and compliance controls, project brief and customer requirements.
  • Time, cost, quality, resource and delivery management including communication with the department and management to ensure that resource and project requirements are clearly understood and met.
  • Contribute to the preparation of enquiry plans, tender reviews, fee estimate sheets, scopes of work and change controls.
  • Monitoring of project fee spend and deliver commercial objectives including invoicing and Cost Value Report management. 
  • Management of staff in the production of calculations, design deliverables (including drawings,
    specifications and reports), site surveys, construction stage duties, client liaison, liaison with members of design/construction teams, project management, costing and any other relevant duty required to comply with the project brief.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Chartered Member of Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE)
  • Significant experience of delivering projects in at least one sector that BakerHicks operates in.
  • Experience managing small teams from Apprentices and Graduates to Senior Engineer level.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to eloquently present complex ideas.
  • Strong ability to develop enduring relationships with both internal and external stakeholders that
    deliver long term benefits.
  • Outstanding design, technical detailing and specification writing experience.

Desirable

  • Demonstrable experience of delivering multi-disciplinary projects in several sectors that
    BakerHicks operates in.
  • Experience in managing multi-disciplinary teams to deliver complex projects.
  • Experience in using the following specialist software:
    • IES Thermal Modelling
    • AutoCAD
    • Revit

Qualifications and training

  • A member of a Professional Institute such as CIBSE or IET, Fellow would advantageous
  • Registered as a low carbon consultant (ideal)
  • Ideally you will be a Chartered Engineer or I.Eng, degree qualified in Building Services or similar
  • Additional Experience will be considered in lieu of professional registration
